“I’ll be honest, I was initially skeptical about this podcast for how it might cause further harm to the trans community. While it poses some interesting questions (that are relevant to anyone who feels we are living in an ever increasingly polarised world) I don’t think Rowling was challenged enough in the final episode. None of her comments were challenged, she made several contradictory statements, and there seemed to be very little fact checking completed about her ‘research’ which I think was an oversight of the producers. I think this really let the series down and poses questions about the journalistic integrity of the podcast; disappointing as otherwise it had felt like it attempted a balanced and nuanced view. I wondered if the lack of fact checking suited the producers own priorities - normalising her statements could then suggest that the general public’s reaction to her were in line with a moral panic similar to the theme of witch trials, as the show continues to refer back to, rather than people raising very reasonable concerns. Still, the weaving of the narrators own personal story offered a depth I wasn’t expecting, and on the whole I don’t regret listening to it, as it was one of the better produced podcasts (in terms of entertainment) I have listened to for a while. If you are from the queer or trans community, might be one to listen to if you are not feeling particularly vulnerable and can take it for what it is (including thinly veiled transphobia). If you are not, I urge you to listen to the wealth of information available from the majority of health experts and human rights activists calling for trans rights (many of whom are not aggressive/threatening) before relying on the information provided by Rowling in this podcast, which is very skewed to her agenda.”
