Zarna Garg—and her lovely family—are hilarious, sweet, and entertaining.
I have been a Zarna fan since I heard her on Mike Birbiglia’s podcast, “Working It Out.” I was instantly captivated by her manner, her voice (both literal and metaphoric), and her story. An Indian immigrant mom of three, and former lawyer, who began comedy in her early 40s at the urging of her extraordinarily accomplished and beautiful (Stanford) daughter, Zarna’s route to comedy was unorthodox. Zarna went viral for her riotously funny review of a Birkin bag, which she purchased as a young hedge fund wife—and regards as an embarrassing , stupid purchase not only because it’s a silly status symbol but a wildly impractical bag in NYC. (Opening and closing it is an elaborate, time consuming operation so if on and off subways—which Birkin owners are not, evidently supposed to ride—you end up leaving it open.) I was touched initially by her transparency and candor. Unlike Birbiglia and most of his peers, she wasn’t a broke 20something sleeping on an inflatable mattress in the other boroughs. I’ve seen her live three times and she never disappoints. Even when I have heard some of the material before, I laugh as much as I did the first time. That’s the mark of a truly great comedian. Of course she’s not just pitching her act to white people. Her comedy is transgressive, taking on topics taboo among South Asians and poking fun at the stereotypes (rooted in truth) about Indian parents’ emphasis on STEM. No English or sociology majors allowed! Zarna is a natural but her work ethic is exactly you’d expect from a biochemist or engineer. It’s impossible not to love Zarna. Her husband is equally lovable and funny (but don’t tell her that!), as are her beautiful , smart children.
