Superficial and confused
This podcast sets out to explain nonbinary identities. However, right out of the gate it conflates sex and gender - for instance, the host reporting “not identifying as male” - and does not engage with the most basic of questions, namely: why is it useful to regard “male” and “female” as identities based on gendered stereotypes (eg, wearing heels) and not as neutral biological categories? Gender-nonconforming people are not a new phenomenon, and many (including myself) have suffered for not fitting into the set of narrow expectations foisted upon both male and female people. We would all benefit from doing away with those expectations entirely, so that “he” and “she” can refer to people's physiology and nothing more. By instead characterizing those who don't identify in the manners associated with “real” men and women as nonbinary, and by requiring for those people pronouns that cannot be deduced from observation and that even the most dedicated allies will inevitably get wrong, we do little but set self-identified nonbinary people up for distress and anxiety. Indeed, Fundal and the nonbinary guests describe at length the anxiety and distress they experience when others use the pronouns and words that correspond to their sex. My generation (X) got it right: we took “he” and “she” to be simple biological labels that implied no restrictions on how we dressed or felt or acted, and this allowed us to bend rules and break barriers without spending endless hours contemplating our gender identities.Read full review »
