Buckle in, kids. This review is long. Ok, I’ve been theoretically anti-diet for most of my adult life (I say “theoretically” because we all know how hard it is to practice the anti-diet walk in our weight-obsessed, nightmare culture). But Whitney is one of the first social media voices I’ve come across to affirm and even teach me more about why I’ve felt this way for so long (spoiler: it’s because I was right. Diets are garbage). But taking in Whitney’s thoughtful advice and recommendations through this podcast have also had an added, unexpected benefit on my healing process. Oddly enough, learning to reject diet culture has also helped me deal with the loss of my dad. Let me explain: Almost a year ago, my father died in a motorcycle accident. His death was tragic and unexpected, but reading the coroner’s report, you would never know that a motorcycle crash is what killed him. Because he had been having some heart problems the previous year, it was ruled that that is mostly what caused his death. The moving motor vehicle collision was apparently just incidental. Reading that report felt so much like my father was being blamed for his own death. It still pains me so much to hear my grandfather lament over and over, “but he was doing so well. Eating right, exercising. His doctor even gave him a clean bill of health the day before!” If only he had had more self-control and didn’t choose to clog his own arteries (or whatever. I don’t know heart anatomy) through all of his unhealthy habits, he might never have...what? crashed his motorcycle on the freeway? Learning to accept that “health” isn’t something we can control as much as we pretend we can has really helped me start to come to terms with the fact that my father’s death was an accident. A cruel, unfair, but painfully run-of-the-mill accident. He didn’t eat himself to death. It wasn’t his fault. Take the plunge. Listen to Whitney. Learn to make peace with your body (and wage holy war on diet culture instead). Even if you don’t have some profound, existential experience, you won’t regret it.

This podcast has been so healing, as well as all of Whitney’s social media. Advocacy is so important and she has been killing it! Everyone has been affected by diet culture in one way or another and listening to what she has to say helps mend the relationship between your body and brain

I love how Whitney is unapologetically herself. She brings in her life experiences by relating them to her work, which I really appreciate. Although I’m new to this world of anti-dieting, I’ve learned so much already. It’s honest, unfiltered, and so incredibly helpful.
