Like nothing I've heard before!!!
Have been a big fan of other history podcasts like, Mike Duncan's History of Rome, Dan Carlin's Hardcore History, and nowRobin Pierson's History of Byzantium. It was during one of those episodes that John Harbour's Twilight Histories, Alternate History Podcast was intoduced to me. I downloaded all the episodes yesterday and listened thru them. I couldn't believe what I heard. It reminded me somewhat of those Choose Your Own Adventure books I read as a child as well as the Marvel comic What IFs and DC comic Elseworlds series. There was also a very shortlived series in the late 90's on one of the cable learning channels (Discovery, TLC, History, I can't remember which) That brought up interesting historical "what if" questions like Martin Luther King Assasination attempt failing or the San Franciso Earthquake causing more damage than it did. I like the dramatic concept of having history take a different route in some alternate mirror universe that I first saw in Star Trek Original Series where things are mostly the same but just different enough to have radically changed the landscape of the culture and society. I enjoy the listener participation that includes them in the experience. The music and sound effects incorporates me into the story of this alternate universe. The Time Traveler in his machine method is interesting to take a look at. I can envision jouneying thru time taking long sweeps of a possible set of events that take place over years, decades, and centuries. This is a viable concept and lets my imagination run wild to create pictures of that possible existence. The personal experience of someone's interactive journey through a historical period of time is also an intriguing concept. I feel each of the stories could be branched off into their own podcasts ( Ice age, preistess of Minos, Roma Islamica, Deep City) and, almost like those choose your own adventure books from my childhood, have listeners vote on what course of action they would take at the episode's end. Any which way or tangent that John want s to go is fine with me. I love this show's concept and hope more like it spring up in the podcast community. Extremely Recommended.Read full review »
