Deeply human
I feel a loss now that this podcast has finished. As a recent former member of this community- an ex-citizen of Shambhala- it feels painful and also healing to hear these stories. A gift! It makes so much sense hearing this how abuse has been rampant and built into the fabric of the sangha. As a survivor of abuse myself I need to make some sense of it. It’s a giant “dysfunctional family” dynamic that we had and that continues for many. Trungpa’s trauma undoubtedly was the ground that Shambhala was planted in and it was absolutely perfect that Nina ended on that poignant tender spot. It’s hard to pin down a villain in this story- although I think there certainly are some. But having chanted the words “good, bad, happy, sad all thoughts vanish into emptiness like the imprint of a bird in the sky” so many times and learned in so many other ways that we can’t ever really know what is what, we’re left only with our own experiences as the truth on these things. I realize now how deeply amoral a lot of the messaging of the Shambhala dharma is which also stacks up with the lived reality. “Who can say what is what? I’ll have what he’s having.” seems to be what has gone on in large part.

A wonderful and harrowing soundscape journey into an unbelievably trying childhood under fascinating circumstances.

Nina is a natural-born storyteller, and it works to her advantage as she weaves a provocative and intimate portrait that captures, at its core, something we all want— and the lengths we’re willing to go to get it: to be seen.

A much needed insight into the the harms and abuses perpetrated by the founder of the Naropa University. It’s hard to listen to this and know he is still so widely venerated among Americans audiences.
