I can’t remember the last time I’ve been so moved by something I listened to. An astonishing exploration of loss and love and those we leave behind.

This is one of the most emotional, enduring and even humorous stories of friendship after one’s life is ultimately cut short and the other is left with only “pieces of him”. The podcast is mixed with hundreds of Britney Spears references and a story that leads you down a fun little rabbit hole...Read full review »

This is a truly heartwarming tribute (and mini mystery) to a beloved friend. I enjoyed this mini podcast and hope something else springs from it.

Not only is this series a beautiful tribute to someone clearly so loved, but it’s exceptionally crafted and brings you along in an engaging, earnest and emotional way that few others could have done. Can’t recommend this enough.

Unfolds like a mystery, and coalesces into a beautiful portrait of the pain and secrets we hide and the constant struggle to understand one another.

I met the subject of this podcast briefly while living in Portland; he was one-of-a-kind in that you felt an instant kinship and acceptance in his friendship. Even without knowing him Personally, this storytelling is captivating, heart squeezing, personal and lovely. The details Alex left...Read full review »

I binged all episodes in one day, and loved it. This portrayal of mental health, suicide, grief, friendship, and a search for meaning is incredibly personal and vulnerable. Yet it’s also remarkably compelling, more like reading a favorite novel than watching home videos of someone you just met....Read full review »

This is an amazing podcast. In terms of technical aspects: the quality was so good it felt more like listening to a great audiobook because the writing was amazing, too. The narrator, Chris, is very eloquent and a great speaker. Production quality aside, I think this podcast was so many amazing...Read full review »

This podcast was refreshing in its honesty and openness, in ways that made me laugh, cry and feel validated. I haven’t heard a podcast like this since Serial Season 1. It is a love letter to growing up queer, from a boy to his friend, to Britney Spears, and to community (digital and irl).

I don’t know what I was expecting when I started Unread, I was just hoping for an interesting story to listen to while doing chores, but I was really blown away. This is a story about friendship, between host Chris and his friend Alex, who’s tragic death was the impetus for the podcast. While...Read full review »

host Chris Stedman’s skills as a nonfiction writer are on full display on Unread. the heartbreaking story that anchors this series could stand on its own and be plenty powerful, but all of the side angles, rabbit holes, and other “characters” give the series a depth and emotional arc that make...Read full review »

I put this show on on a whim late last night, and was immediately just sucked right into the story. My main reason for listening, was to get some more info on the Britney/Alice situation, because I’ve only heard snippets of it. Early in the first episode, my attention shifted entirely from that,...Read full review »

A beautiful, moving podcast. As someone who’s been affected by suicide, I’m often at a loss for words when discussing it: how can we respectfully speak of those who have taken their own lives? How do we honor their need for absence while mourning their loss in our own lives? Chris Stedman has...Read full review »

i cannot say enough good things about this podcast! the story is moving and chris does an excellent job structuring it and interspersing old recordings with his narration. this is the first podcast i was ever able to listen to all the way through, and making the effort to do so was well worth it.

It’s a cop out to start this by saying “I’m not a fan of Britney Spears” - as if I’m trying to prove something, or as if being a fan is somehow “less than” - but I do think it’s a relevant thing to note. I don’t have the words to describe how great this podcast is! It is a stirring, adventurous, honest, and lovely tribute to the life of Alex (a young man who completed a suicide attempt). A beautiful, personal reflection on how community forms around collective trauma and grief - both in person and online. Chris invites us to wrestle with profound questions of meaning and loss, but there’s plenty of joy and celebration of a dear friend here too.

i mostly enjoyed this but i didn’t quite get why bipolar mania wasn’t addressed in this podcast at all. perhaps chris just didn’t want to presume things but alex’s actions and personality seem like it would be less of a puzzle if there was an understanding or at least acknowledgment of the disorder.

In the end Im not sure what exactly was so special about Alex. I’m sure he was a good friend, but then…? This feels like one of those podcasts made for the sake of making a podcast, with more build-up the actual content. I enjoyed it while I listened but felt unsatisfied in the end.

I’ve been recommending this podcast to all my friends. When they ask what kind of podcast it is, I tell them to just listen to it, please.
