Goenko’s vipassana Meditation from a student’s positive perspective .
I’m a psychotherapist who also practices vipassana meditation and gone on several Goenko retreats and given service at many . The first was in France in 2011 , followed by many in England at three centres . They have successfully grown all over the world since the 1980s giving thousands the opportunity to practice a form of mediation that offers calmness and equanimity in one’s life. I’m disappointed and sad that you appear to be stating that the vipassana retreats are somehow responsible for causing the deaths of some individuals. First of all , the Goenka vipassana foundation is entirely voluntary , no one receives an income , all the teachers give their service completely free . It is entirely run by volunteers and is funded by donations. At the end of a retreat, a student is invited to give a monetary amount , whatever you can afford. There is a very wide cross culture of students attending ranging from the rich successful to the unemployed and disadvantaged. Before attending a 10 day retreat everyone needs to complete a long application form where you have to state if you have addictions, if you’re on medication, what types.. etc. if you appear to be at risk in any way, your application is turned down. During my experience on retreats both as a student and offering service, I experienced a supportive structure. Every day there is an allotted time where you can talk to the teacher about your practice and if you are struggling in any way. There is also volunteers there to specifically attend to student’s welfare and to notice if a student is in need of support . What makes this world wide organisation unique is the fact it isn’t a profit motivated corporation . It is run completely on donations and is transparent in every way. Goenko , it’s founder did not become a millionaire guru and the organisation is run with total ethical integrity. I work in mental health and my prime purpose is to prevent suicides and to help those with mental problems . This form of mediation is an opportunity to learn a technique that has helped millions to manage anxieties at a minimum cost and can be deeply healing. I have total empathy for the sad experiences you relate to and I also state that It’s an autonomous choice to attend and that has to be respected . Once again I’m disappointed with your seemingly biased journalism . I hope you take on board my observations and judgements and offer alternative viewpoint on you podcast. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

More reviews of Untold: The Retreat
This is a horrifying story and I found it fascinating. My criticism is that like many podcasts it was too slow with too much music, too much fake suspense and too much touchy feely fake understanding. I enjoyed Hot Money because music was used sparsely and the story rattled on with so many...Read full review »
