“I listened to this show in reverse order, and am glad I did. Obviously the production value improved, but the main difference is in Payne’s role and storytelling. There were definitely some cringe elements in season 1, but 3&4 showed a real depth of empathy and advocacy for the MMIWG crimes and tragedies. Particularly season 4, where the family affected have a central step by voice. For those who liked the later seasons, I’d suggest Someone Knows Something, which I think is the gold standard for ethical, empathetic cold case reporting that centres the voice and healing process of the families at the centre.”
