Timely, responsive and informed.
When I studied politics at university, my favourite classes were the ones led by people who had lived their history - I was taught about Allende's Chile by someone who was there when Pinochet's coup took place; I was taught about the former Yugoslavia and the Bosnian Genocide by someone who recalled how easy it was to buy an AK47 at the time... They made it real, and my worldview was forever changed as a result. So many of our opinions today are informed by people who have never been to the place they're opining on, viewing everything through a colonial lens - making it so much easier to dehumanise and malign marginalised groups and people. Upstream is very, very different in that regard. Della and Robert have a talent for finding the right people at the right time - from academics to organisers to the people at the heart of the issue - and recent episodes on Palestine, Cop City and longer documentary style episodes on capitalism and freedom have been excellent. They let people speak - never grandstanding or allowing their egos to take over, but they've also clearly done their research ahead of time to support their guests in telling their stories. They've created a relaxed setting where you're safely able to reconsider your worldview, but rather than feeling overwhelmed, are supported in recognising that there are workable solutions to the world's problems - from the environment to the economy to global politics - while at the same time coming to realise how interlinked these issues are and who our real enemies are. We're not dealing with idealism here, but actual solutions that address the objections we so often hear from the right with regard to socialism and decolonisation. Their twitter and instagram feeds are also excellent bite-sized sources of easily accessible and sharable information. If Robert could work on his pronunciation of 'bourgeois', Upstream would be perfect!Read full review »
