Valley 101 Just the right thing for an expat Arizonan
Bilas Peles via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 02/08/24
As a native, listening to a bunch of non natives giving opinions and incorrect information is unbearable. The narrators voice is as well, unbearable. So much potential unrecognized here.

Much potential. I revisit this pod every road trip and while I like the topics - execution and production leaves a lot to be desired.

I grew up in Phoenix and long since moved away. These little snippets feel like coming home and remind me of what a wonderful and unique place we have in the Valley of the Sun. Keep up the great work!

... I say every time I listen to this podcast. So many of us in the valley we not born here. This podcast is like having a nice chat with a knowledgeable native over a cup of coffee. I can’t get enough.

Great concept. Arizona has an interesting history, and many of its residents did not grow up here. However, the execution of this show is awful. The narrators sound like seventh graders reading from a script. They also, obviously, know very little about the history of the state. Sometimes the...Read full review »

I listen to very one. The best ones discuss the history of the area. Be forewarned tough, some shows especially the latest Covid one, have a lot of politics in them.

As a relatively new person to the area, I delight in learning about my new home. Keep up the good work!

Fantastic description of the grid system in Phoenix! Been living here 45 years and this is the best description yet.

All of the episodes I have listened to so far have been great and a very pleasant and much needed break from the COVID-19 news saturation. I am a transplant and have enjoyed learning some local history presented in way that rivals the best podcast documentaries I’ve heard. Thank you!!!!

Great listening material! I’m an east coast transplant and have been living in the Valley now for 10 years. I love learning about AZ and the length is just right! I listen during my lunch break!

I have thoroughly enjoyed this podcast from the beginning. As a 30+ year resident of the valley I have learned some new things and have also enjoyed revisiting topics from “back in the day”... The variety of topics, from serious to silly, are informative and entertaining. Love it!

I love learning more about this great state of Arizona. I love the topics and the length of episodes are perfect. Keep it up!!

As a lifelong resident of the East Valley I’m happy to have been directed to this new podcast about the place I call home. I’m learning new stuff with each pod as well as more depth about things I knew tangentially.

Love learning more about the valley but I have to listen to this at 1 1/2 speed. There are too many idk “sound bites”. I get that they’re trying to paint a picture but when talking about the opening of the deck park tunnel I think hearing the sounds of an old timer horn, fire works and people...Read full review »

I like the idea of this podcast, but I’m offended that they didn’t mention how detrimental wood burning and burning of yard debris and garbage (and incredibly common practice in Phoenix) greatly contributes to particle pollution in the winter. Just seems irresponsible to not mention one of the...Read full review »

TheAZ Republic team does a great job digging into details about the Valley.

Loving this podcast because it’s brief enough to listen to during this in between times, and has so much great info! My friends, who are also native, and I can’t believe what we did not know about our awesome state!

It’s difficult to clearly hear and understand anyone speaking who is not the host. And the background music is often too loud while someone is talking — and I’m young with good hearing! Content is great.

As a transplant, I quickly discovered that I knew little about Phoenix and Arizona. But after listening to Valley 101, I know more than many lifelong residents. The Indian School episode stands out in my memory, but they're all good, keep up the great work.Read full review »

A very interesting podcast about the Wright designed capitol. Take a look at the Wright Designed Marin Civic Center in San Rafael, CA to see one of his large municpal designs executed.

I *love* this podcast! I moved from the Valley of the Sun after graduating from ASU, and I love learning stories from the metro region, especially the history and the issues facing the area today. Can’t wait to hear what comes next!

Great show, but why the loud background music when guests speak! Can barely hear them!

I absolutely love this podcast. It's a great combination of fun, light hearted pieces and deep looks at the sometimes ugly history of Phoenix. Highly recommend to anyone who lives here, or is just generally interested!Read full review »

I love this podcast, I’m always telling people about the recycling one and like learning more about how AZ came together. The music is distracting/too loud sometimes, but they added captions to a video once after I yelled at them on twitter so I forgive them ❤️

The Valley 101 podcast has become a weekly habit. The interesting topics always teach me something about life in the Valley of the Sun, and the reporters keep it fun and upbeat. Production quality is high, NPR-level. So glad Azcentral.com is making this podcast - of course you should subscribe to...Read full review »

Love the topics. Just the right amount of depth. Makes me care more about the Valley. And I appreciate the length too. Easy to drop in and learn something.

I’m impressed with level of production as well as the beginnings of inclusivity seen in Episode one. This is an opportunity to learn more about my home in a clean and succinct way. It also feels like there is a communication bridge between listeners and staff which would be amazing for...Read full review »

I really enjoyed the recycling episode. I think this topic can really be expanded upon with a follow up episode that perhaps talks about how the city is planning to improve our recycling process, educate people etc. I have subscribed and will continue to listen weekly.

When I first heard there was going to be a phoenix-focused podcast produced by Gannett/azcentral/AZ Republic, I didn’t have much hope given their overall track record. But after listening to episode 1, I’m in. The team did a great job creating a show that’s not just interview based but also tells...Read full review »
