Ignorable Flaws...kind of...
Obviously not completely ignorable flaws because I was compelled to mention them, but I want to be clear that this is a pretty entertaining horror podcast despite them. Flaws: almost every voice actor - whether playing rural Vermont (obviously not) teenagers or urban millenials who listen to NPR - has the vocal inflections of a 20-something midwestern suburbanite who has lived about a year in Brooklyn. If you're so used to this speaking style that you consider it normal/neutral that's no problem...but it made me giggle sometimes. Second, the actor playing the main character's girlfriend has a very naturalistic, casual approach to dialogue and this is good, but narration then suggests that she is being punitive, concerned, or what have you, when she pretty much always sounds like she is ordering a latte at Starbucks. Likewise, the narrator describes himself being "defensive" in response to her when he also sounds pretty casual and, well, not at all defensive. It's hard to tell if the narrator/main character is strangely paranoid every time they talk to each other or if his girlfriend is incredibly passive-aggressive and we are only privy to it on the basis of his commentary. Either way, the "drama" of their relationship as described through narration doesn't seem to match up with the relationship as depicted in their dialogue. Nitpicky complaints, I know, for a horror podcast...but, like I said, it's become a distraction as the otherwise very well made, paced and, yes, GENERALLY well voice-acted story unfolds. So...everyone involved should consider it a compliment that these little flaws stand out because otherwise it's a fun, quality listen compared to a lot of other horror fiction podcasts out there! Just sharing my nitpicks in case there's a sequel (and I hope there is)!Read full review »
