Description
Artist Ronald Lawrence talks with curator Ceri Thomas before an audience of MA Arts Practice and MA Arts, Health and Wellbeing students and staff in his retrospective exhibition at Oriel y Bont. Lawrence was chosen as the feature artist at the University of Glamorgan’s art gallery in 2013 not only to celebrate his 60-year career as an artist (and 30-year career as an art educator) in South Wales but also to mark the institution’s transformation into the University of South Wales. He was born close to the gallery in Hopkinstown, Pontypridd, in 1929 and has lived and worked in the area all his life. He works in many media (including painting, sculpture and photography) and many styles, and he has exhibited widely in England and Wales. However, this was his first exhibition at the university, and it was the first time that a comprehensive range of his ever-changing work produced from all periods of his life had been brought together in a public place. In Part 1, Lawrence and Thomas talk in the main gallery space and set the scene. They look at specific paintings and sculptures, styles and techniques dating from 1953 to 2012. In Part 2, Lawrence and Thomas talk in the side gallery space about photography, art education, Matisse, Ivor Cutler, Leslie Moore, guitars, improvisation and more. Additional notes: • Ceri Thomas is the Art Curator for the University of South Wales • Oriel y Bont (gallery) is on the University’s Treforest Campus • The exhibition was displayed from 11 March to 3 May 2013 • The University of South Wales was formed in April 2013 following the merger of the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport.
