A great idea suffers from a poor host
Weird Work is a terrific podcast in theory - a program that highlights the weird nature of people’s bizarre odd-jobs that we never consider as “work” in day to day life. That gets stinted by Sam Balter. Balter’s hyper-casual interview style borders on awkward at times - he drops heavy cussing way before a guest does - if they do at all, and he’s quick to diverge into small talk that’s entirely derailing to the interview. His interview questions are rarely compelling, and thus, it’s reliant entirely on the guest to provide substance for the show. I’ve loved hearing the guests, but sitting through Balter’s bizarre, too-casual interview style sounds more like each of the said guests is being interviewed by an overly excited campus radio host - not a professional.
