“I felt like she buried the lede and that she had an important piece of the puzzle as to why he did what he did, and kept it to the very last episode almost as a footnote. If someone gets a settlement from the Catholic Church, that means that they were abused, severely and repeatedly - that’s also coercive control by the priest. It doesn’t justify or excuse anything of course, he was a monster, but he was also abused and obviously never dealt with the trauma. This is important because at the very minimum it explains the anger and his behavior and how his life unfolded after. It makes the case that trauma and abuse is systemic and learned and passed down. Thank goodness he never remarried and never had kids.”
