Two gentlemanly assassins
The talk is gentile enough, but the contradictions, selective memories, and devious logic show these two for what they are: a couple of Microsoft hitmen assigned to take Apple out. I listened to the weekly 8 episode. Some of the highlights: 1) Thurrott claims he can't remember what Apple's side bar is called. Yet anyone who's ever read THURROTT's version of unbiased journalism, Internet Nexus, knows that on that site he professes to know much about Macs. On that site Thurrott even confesses to using them. Here's where Thurrott's disingenuousness and selective memory is revealed. On Internet Nexus he can claim to know about Macs, but on TWIT he can claim he doesn't know anything about Macs or about major parts of its GUI. Maybe his wife, according to Thurrott a Mac user, can help remind him. 2) Thurrott is going to try to exclusively use the Zune while at Redmond for a week. If that's not a shill in action, I don't know what is. 3) Vista will become the new standard OS. By Thurrott's logic everyone uses PCs and will be purchasing them instead of Macs. Of course these new purchases will have Vista pre-installed, ergo Vista will become the new standard OS. The problem with this logic is that the volume buyers of PCs, i.e. corporations, are installing their own images and they're not installing bleeding-edge beta software from Microsoft. Some are even installing Linux (shudder to think). To top that, consumer's reading the bad reviews of Vista will not upgrade their hard earned hardware in order to fix something that isn't broken. Of course any former customer of Microsoft's might consider the challenger's alternative. But according to Thurrott, Apple's challenge is nothing more than a futile effort against the pre-ordained led by a group of 'brainwashed, Steve Jobs kool-aid drinking, vanity conscious, Apple marketing suckered' zealots. You can't trust a journalist with such emotional biases towards consumers. Especially consumers who are doing nothing more than looking for good alternatives to Windows. 4) Zune is going to be tightly integrated into Vista. Nothing new here. Another reason to boycott the monopoly. Laporte acts as the saintlier of the two occasionally saying something positive or from experience about Macs. But Thurrott lets these fall away like badly served tennis balls. I couldn't believe their definition of FUD as being brought on by competing companies. I'd like anyone to show me FUD against Apple directly linked to Microsoft. Microsoft uses people like Thurrott to propagate FUD. He totally denies it in this podcast. He's definitely slick. The gist of the subtext is that Apple will be pushed out of the digital download market by Microsoft in a few years. I did learn something new though, Thurrott rhymes with rot.Read full review »

Paul Thurott and Leo Laporte are absolutely entertaining to listen to. The stories are very up to date and the discussion that follows is great.
