Amazing performer with a sometimes-amazing podcast
I’m giving this five stars because of Lauren Lapkus’s unbelievable talent, but I have to admit that this isn’t my favorite thing she does on Earwolf. I much prefer her on Comedy Bang! Bang! and improv4humans, and it’s the format of this show that is the reason. It’s a clever idea to have Lauren play a fictional guest on a new, fictional podcast every week, but sometimes the extended wackiness of it can become tiresome. The episodes that stick out in my mind as the best are the ones in which the “host” for the week plays it straight (Paul F. Tompkins, Betsy Sodaro) and Lauren provides the goofiness. Other weeks, it’s just so off-the-rails and barely grounded (and, frankly, long) that it’s almost tedious. (Almost.) One exception to this is perhaps when James Adomian did an episode of the Tom Leykis show, but I think that worked because James knows that character inside and out and it’s based on a real radio program. That Lauren and her "host-guests” can keep playing for so long is a testament to their talents, but I don’t know that it’s always the best showcase for them. I haven’t identified them explicitly myself, but I think if you went through all of the episodes released so far you could probably find some tropes that tend to get recycled, particularly once you get past a certain point in the show. I feel like everyone eventually reveals some weird sexual or mystical preoccupation around 20 minutes in, and I think it speaks to the performers running out of things to say rather than these being interesting themes to explore. Anyway, I’m critical of the show because I like Lauren Lapkus’s work on podcasts so much and it’s disappointing that the show's format dulls her brilliance (which I can’t emphasize enough… she may be the most talented improviser I’ve ever heard). I listen to every show, but it’s not a podcast I always listen to the day (or even the week) it comes out. (As a final note: at least every show wraps up with Help Me Rhonda.)Read full review »

More reviews of With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus
This is the best of both worlds: a fresh idea and twist on interview podcasts and the Ms. Lapkus using her different characters to give a different feel to each show making it fresh each time. Great show. She deserves more notoriety.

This is like some sort of reverse Andy Daly's Podcast Pilot Project, but just as funny.Read full review »
