A failure of imagination
This podcast fails at its central idea. The host has far too narrow and limited an imagination to truly think of anything being radically different. This is best seen in the episode “A World Without Prisons” which is actually only about the idea of one country without private prisons on a federal level. What a minuscule thing to explore compared to the claim of the title and the idea of the show. Expanding our imagining of the world is central to the work of prison abolitionists. This is a well established idea. There are activists, scholars, policymakers, and artists who this show could have looked to in order to actually try to explore how to imagine a world without prisons. But it didn’t do that. It did the opposite - starting with a large claim, but treating that as unthinkable and so creating instead an extremely narrow imagined set of possibilities. That is emblematic of the failure of imagination which is this show. This show is harmful.
