Credible Credulity
I’m very much enjoying this well-made and intelligent series. At episode one I was, frankly, a bit sceptical wondering how those involved - the disciples, the believers who flocked to the church in Lagos - could be so credulous. How could they possibly believe this stuff? But - my - how the episodes draw you in. The strength of the series is in the varied montage of voices and the time given to respectful listening with attention given to participants’ stories and viewpoints. The way this fake Messiah controlled a phoney organisation and exploited his vulnerable believers is chilling and provides thoughtful and demanding insights into the cult of powerful personalities. The parallels with the current global political and commercial situation are not spelled out but are apparent and obvious. There’s much food for thought here. Hats off to all involved. This is well made - the BBC at its best - and deserves our attention. Well done.

My only very minor critique: I wanted the reporters to draw more of a connection between Epstein and these guys. It seemed like such an obvious parallel.

A first class BBC exposé about a fake religious leader who fooled millions around the world, violated women and conjured up fake ‘miracles’. I couldn’t stop listening.

Well documented and reported. My heart goes out to those men. Can’t wait to hear what you do next.
