Great to hear about the neuroscience behind yoga
Thanks so much for the great questions you asked Dr. Daya about the practical applications of the neuroscience of yoga for everyone from children to athletes. Her summary of the structural and functional changes that a yoga practice can make to the brain was excellent. Regarding the research evidence for yoga interventions for kids with ADHD, there is moderate evidence from a number of trials which indicates significant positive outcomes on core symptoms such as hyperactivity and executive function, as well as parent-child relationships. One Australian study on boys with ADHD who were on meds, found that yoga breathing and relaxation techniques were particularly effective in the evening when they were getting restless because the effect of the medication was reduced. There is just so much good science now on the benefits of yoga. Our biggest problem as both yogis and (in my own case) as scientists, is crossing the great communication divide. That’s why I recently summarized all the scientific research findings thus far on yoga into a book (“Does Yoga Work? Answers from Science”, on Amazon). This interview was a really wonderful contribution to the dialogue we need to be having about the real-world effects of our amazing practice. Thank you so much Andrea for giving these issues an airing! Hope to hear a lot more about this in future episodes.
