It was once said that Adversity comes for us all and I think it’s fair to say that the last 2 years have asked brought each of us a level of adversity that we were not perhaps ready for. With that in mind, we thought it was time for another special.
This time, Phil was joined by the IOH’s present and past chairs, Kellie Rixon MBE FIH and Robin Sheppard FIH, to discuss a wholly under discussed topic, Adversity.
As always, before we got stuck into our headline topic Phil asked each of the guests their reasons for saying #Imin to the Institute of Hospitality.
Kellie felt that she had a responsibility to contribute as well as having an eye on professional standards and developing future leaders, Embracing the diversity of the sector, and she is delighted to be playing a part in the IOH’s evolution.
Robin was very much about giving back and playing his part in getting the industry to be taken more far more seriously.
Both our guests (And Phil) recounted moments of extreme adversity that has shaped their lives in different ways and had such wonderful insight from the get-go. We learned a lot including: -
Perception of what is adversity to you is determined by your own knowledge and circumstanceBeing positive and strong is the only choiceAdversity is not a raceFocus on what you can do, rather than what you can’tYou decide how you reactBe relentless in pursuit of knowledgeTalking openly about your adversity can really help you get past your darkest momentHumour can play a huge part in healingFind the things to celebrateAdversity can bring strength, unity and kindnessAdversity can recalibrate what is importantSeeking counsel to talk things through is important but the timing of that is keyYou can see the very best of humanity in moments of adversityIt gives you an insight into a much bigger picture of life
Phil classed this as an honour to talk about such a valuable topic with two major champions of our industry and hopes that there is some key learning for everyone
A huge thank you to our guests who talked so openly about their vulnerability.
Enjoy!
