Radical human life extension was on the menu for American longevity guru Peter Attia recently. It begged the question to us - how and why are we even talking life extension when we can hardly reach 120? Attia’s article focused on studies around rats and the drug Rapamycin, with older rats having their life extended by between 9 and 14%. We discuss on this podcast the observation that humans are doing a pretty average job at even reaching 120 (arguably, it’s never been done).

According to researcher Saul Justin Newmann, ‘The data on extreme human ageing is rotten from the inside out’. We don’t think so Saul. And either do the demographers who did the bulk of Blue Zones research. 5 of the world’s top demographers have come out and picked Newmann’s pre-print “research” to pieces. (Pre-print meaning this research has never been published; in other words unable to get pass the rigour of peer-reviewed research.)

Is Longevity Simple? Or is the term longevity, like the term wellness, being exploited for commercial gain? Longevity tells us how to live longer and healthier. But is it as simple as taking a supplement or well marketed product? Are we over simplifying something which is relatively complicated? Are we, in looking for the easy path, the quick fix, in fact racing to the end of life without realising it?
