The Scillies 60 is a new race for 2023. 60km spread over 6 legs on 5 of the islands of the Isles of Scilly - starting and finishing on Tresco and following the coast path to complete a lap of each island.  So here how it works: The first leg is around 10km on Tresco and runners have 63 minutes in which to complete it. If you make the cut off you’re on the boat to the next island. To ensure runners know that the timer is in synch with their own timings with 2 minutes to go the Claxon sounds....

I met Jan Davies at the beginning of April at the Cornwall Running Show. I was recording 2-3 minute snippets with show visitors. When I asked Jan about her plans she said she was running at the end of April the Thames Ring. How far is that I casually asked. 250 miles Jan casually replied! With 100 hours (that's 4 days and 4 hours) to complete it in. Even regular guest and huge distance runner Jim Spencer hasn't, as far as I know, tackled a 250 miler. In this episode Jan will tell us how...

Christine took part in the 400m, the 800m, the 1500m and the 4 x 200m mixed relay. If you are 35+ you are a Masters...

Starting at Perranporth Airfield the route takes you up to the top of St Agnes Beacon - you then drop left for a lop of around 1.3 miles before returning to the top of the Beacon and then via several more climbs make your way back to the airfield and the Start /Finish area. It was my birthday on Sunday April 2nd so what better way to celebrate than running the 22 miles of Exe to Axe which starts on the Exmouth seafront and finishes on the Seaton seafront. Organised by Sidmouth Road Runners this is a tough coastal path run which is particularly hard in the second half from Sidmouth. A great sense of achievement when I crossed the finish line. Distance wise this was my 8th longest ever run whilst time wise at 5:18 it was my 3rd longest time after the Classic...

I recently got an email from lady called Andrea who I didn’t know who told me she had come across the podcast whilst returning to the UK on a flight from Mallorca after taking part in the 23k version of the Galatzo Trail Mountain Race. I'd never heard of the Galatzo Trail Mountain Race and to add to my intrigue Andrea said it was part of an Alphabet sequence she was running with her daughter and this after achieving her previous goal of running 50 races before turning 50.  Andrea also...

Cousin Jack - the last event organised by Bys Vyken Events. After 7 years David and Sally are moving onto new ventures so a fitting end to their tenure with this most brutal yet spectacular of runs which takes in 18 miles from St Just to St Ives. It is a breathtaking route weaving its way through lots of old tin mining setups but it is tough particularly the section from Zennor to just before St Ives. I started recording just before we left the Miners Chapel in St Just which was race HQ and...

Until a couple of weeks ago I had never heard of 'Jeffing' – named after Jeff Galloway who I understand introduced the running world to the concept of running and walking and still achieving great times. I heard about it on the Bad Boy running podcast when a guy described how he had used Jeffing to run a sub- three hour marathon and qualify for Boston. He ran for two minutes and then walked for 30 seconds. I was intrigued and decided I would give it a go during my next road race which was...

Vassos compares the brutality of the course with the overwhelming friendliness of those who organise it and support it. A big shout out to Jane and Ferg of Mudcrew We met when Vassos came into the Penzance aid station at 39 miles and knowing he was in the race I took along a copy of his Running up that Hill book and asked him...

One of the UK's most prominent ultra running events, the Arc of Attrition, is happening in Cornwall on January 27-28th. There are two versions the 100 mile which starts in Coverack and then shares the same last 50 miles with 50 mile version which starts at the Minack Theatre. The sand dunes at Hayle come into play with around 14 miles to go in both events and at the end of the dunes in the final checkpoint at Godrevy. My plan is to run the Arc 50 in 2024 so now is a good time of year to...

I first met Carrie at the Cornwall Running show in April 2022. Carrie was persuaded to do a short podcast recording during which she explained that she had returned to running in 2021 after several years absence and had decided in 2022 to take on four challenges. And not just any old challenges but four far from easy ones. The Bodmin Beast marathon – a new event that would combine road and trail and in itself be a significant challenge The South-West Traverse – 45 miles on the south-west...

Throughout the summer of 2022 my club colleague Andrew Blizzard was training in readiness for the pursuit of a sub three hour marathon in October. Towards the end of August during a speed session Andrew crossed a back road leading to an industrial estate and having manoeuvred around a car simply failed to notice a motorbike. The upshot was a very smashed up leg. In this episode of the Running 44@60 podcast Andrew recalls the accident and shares the rehabilitation programme he has...

This episode, which is episode number 100 of the Running 44@60 Podcast, was largely recorded on the run at the Loch Ness Marathon 2022. After some very severe editing I hope the recording chronicles my run and indeed how difficult I found it in the last 8 miles or so, not because of the terrain or undulations but for reasons I have yet to properly identify I did find myself walking a bit and then predominantly shuffling those last few miles which seemed to take forever. Maybe I simply...
