Enough well researched insight to be enlightening without drowning in detail; enough light hearted banter and wry comment to make it fun without becoming trivial; enough extracts from the stories to give a feel for them without resorting to just presenting readings... if you have even a passing interest in MR James' fiction and that of his peers, you'll really enjoy this.
