The podcaster is really good. He is always really entertaining and seems to know very well what he is talking about. The best podcast about japanese history in my opinion. Unfortunately there are not enough episodes so it acts more as an introduction to the very wide subject.

Maddeningly infrequent. Great material, well presented. Where is episode 33?

I listened to The History of Japan podcast, and this one is at least as good. Delves in depth into the most interesting aspects, and is very entertaining for history/Japan enthusiasts

Strong narrative style, interesting and factual, well worth the listen. (But the pronunciation of Japanese is killing me and the quote from the Nobunaga episodes is I believe not from "Musashi" but Yoshikawa Eiji's Classic of the Sengoku period "Taiko". Two minor quibbles... And hey I lived in...Read full review »

Cameron does an amazing job going through Japan’s history following a timeline. Hope you can keep continuing soon!

I just discovered this podcast which tells the story of early Japan in a concise and interesting manner. The older episodes are available from the author’s website. Each episode stands on its own, but it helps to go back to the beginning and take them one at a time.

I’ve been catching up with this podcast for the last couple of weeks and it’s really entertaining. Well documented (or so it seems) and structured stories with a twist of humor. Sometimes it requires concentration both because there may be lots of protagonists (with sometimes quite similar...Read full review »

The comparisons with Mike Duncan's The History of Rome are many, reflecting the quality of this podcast. Just wish episodes were released more often!

The Podcast is back! I really enjoy this detailed narrative of Japanese history. Plese just keep them coming more frequently! I actually enjoy the level of detail - this is one of the few podcasts (along with THOR) which I can re-listen to multiple times. The affection/interest in the subject...Read full review »

then silence. Cameron Foster, where are you? You have some podcasting to do! The first dozen episodes were confusing; there were too many names, and not enough "personalities." I couldn't keep track of anything, but picked up enough broad concepts about ninja, puppet emperors, and warrior...Read full review »

I really love this podcast, except the names of people and places are just too foreign to me to keep track of. Hopefully Cameron will release a book with his stories accentuated with maps and such, for which I will happily part with money!

Japanese history is one of the more complicated webs of family ties intertwining, family drama, and ever changing loyalties. This podcast does a top notch job of keeping the players all straight in the listeners mind while making the stories lively and as exciting as they really are. Keep up...Read full review »

Hi Cameron. I'll be travelling Japan this coming June and have just downloaded your series. Would it be possible to make available the full series (from #1 to latest) on iTunes. It would enable newbies like me to enjoy the full podcast by catching up from the beginning. Thanks Paul

Thanks Cameron. As a westener, my history lessons tend to neglect the fact that there are whole sections of the world outside the westen sphere. I have trouble with the names when I try to google them. Please keep up your work.

Excellent overview of Japanese history. The host of this podcast knows his stuff, and condenses it into an interesting, informative and well-paced narrative. Also, an excellent refresher course in Australian slang and humor (oyaji gyagu).

I initially picked up this podcast, listened to the first episode and a half, and set it aside in favor of others. Here in the US, we don't get a lot of info on pre-WWII Japan. This podcast has been filling that big gap for me . . . I just hope Cameron continues to post new episodes! I listened to this podcast while on a trip to Kyoto. Wow, this is amazing.
