Backlisted helped remind me why I love books
I can't remember how I stumbled on Backlisted, but I like the informal 'sitting-around-the-table' feel of the discussion, and the way they ease into every week's podcast. The podcast on Alan Garner's Red Shift got me to re-read the book, and I was prodded into thinking about the book again after decades of leaving it in the 'too hard' basket. One thing that Backlisted do that I haven't encountered elsewhere is read out blurbs on the books and then say whether they're accurate or totally misleading. I also enjoyed hearing the author's voice whenever possible. Whether it's James Baldwin slamming racism in the US or Vladimir Nabokov celebrating his own genius - this is a book group that pushes you gently, yet firmly, towards reading books that often get overlooked by the easier and more accessible airport fodder all around us.Read full review »
