I chose Ulysses as a school prize in 1974 and managed to stumble my way though it without understanding much more than the rude jokes. Re reading Joyce is such a pleasure and is made even more so by the Blooms and Barnacles podcast. I’m reading episodes from Ulysses then reading the relevant...Read full review »

I chose Ulysses as a school prize in 1974 and managed to stumble my way though it without understanding much more than the rude jokes. I then studied it as part of a university course helped by a library copy of the Gifford annotations. A few years later, I attended a hugely enjoyable evening...Read full review »

What a wonderful podcast (and blog), a must for any lover of Joyce from beginners to seasoned Joyceans. Touted as a “non-academic*” podcast don’t be fooled, amidst all the charm, cats, and faux master pupil relationship there is rigour and a great deal of research. But most importantly an...Read full review »

After having read Ulysses a couple of times, read some guides and annotations, some academic papers, trawled through a hypertext version, and listened to the RTE performances (sometimes all at the same time), I thought I understood this book pretty well. This podcast, so nicely balanced between...Read full review »

I’ve read the book through once before and just recently finished Finnegans Wake. I found the podcast through the episode / blog post about translating Finnegans Wake into Japanese and started listening and never stopped. Almost 60 episodes through and Kelly and Dermot do a great job of making it...Read full review »

Absolutely loving Kelly and Dermot’s journey through James Joyce’s Ulysses- their insights into the text and into Irish culture; their careful attention and litheness of mind, and most of all their commitment to Joyce’s modernist masterpiece makes these podcasts and the accompanying blog...Read full review »

After getting partway into the book with the help of Gifford & Seidman’s notes, the Wikipedia article, CliffsNotes, and starting the Ellman biography, I was understanding a lot of the references and characters. However, I felt I was still missing the soul of the novel. The greatest novel of...Read full review »

I really appreciate this podcast. Both for its tangents and focus around James Joyce and Ulysses. I enjoy Dermot’s insight into the world of Ireland. That is something I was lacking, working with Joyce and I want to learn more. I believe it’s really special in that it is not over analyzed to...Read full review »

Blooms and Barnacles podcast is such pleasure. I am heading towards a re-reading of Ulysses and I have found the conversations and insights on this podcast to be both enlightening and truly inviting when it comes to tackling what can be such a challenging book. Kelly and Dermot are a wonderful team.

This podcast about Ulysses (and its accompanying blog) is a pleasure I look forward to each week like a regular meet-up with my best friend. Each week, Kelly and Dermot invite us into a conversation that is warm, welcoming, and fun all while providing thought-provoking and enlightening insights...Read full review »

I fell in love with Ulysses in the context of a college class. When I was done I wanted more but didn’t know where to turn; enter this podcast!! This podcast is engaging, humorous, and intelligent. Thank you for putting so much love and joy into this podcast!

Most Joyce-for-Beginners content isn’t intended to function beyond the Wikipedia stage of engagement. That’s where Blooms & Barnacles comes in. This wonderful show has managed not only to mirror the welcoming & informal atmosphere of a local Joyce reading group, but also proceeds slowly...Read full review »

I love this podcast. I spent years trying to get through Ulysses. I made a little progress, but it was not enjoyable in any way and I didn’t get much out of it. That was before the internet age. Blooms and Barnacles democratise Ulysses. Kelly and Dermot explain it line by line, so we can all...Read full review »

It’s hard to imagine a more detailed or a more loving exposition of Ulysses. Line by line, paragraph by paragraph, Kelly and Dermot work their way through this magnificent novel, filling in the background and teasing out the nuances. Lots of sidebars, like how to support Sweny’s, where Bloom...Read full review »

Just found this pod and have gone back to the start. Alongside the website this is such a fantastic non-academic resource for Ulysses. It’s really helping to deepen my understanding and enjoyed. The discussions between Kelly and Dermot are a treat to listen to. Thanks so much for this. Simon

Everything a great podcast should be. Well researched, presented, and produced. An absolute must for Joyce aficionados. And integrated into a great website with informative articles and original illustrations. The total Ulysses package.

I hate that podcast. Every time I finish an episode, I want to leave my current reading(s) unfinished and reopen ULYSSES, starting over with the new perspective. Joke aside, the podcast feels like a book club discussion among fans. Not academic, but welcoming and engaging fun.
