Staying above the Arctic Circle, but hopping to the east to visit Finland for our Christmas Spectacular. This week, we'll learn about the Joulopukki and the Nuutipukki, as well as stuff you can put in a bottle of vodka to make it taste...better?
This movie earns a solid "Top Shelf" rating from the guys, despite being light on the blood and guts. It's a very well-made movie with an interesting holiday mythology.
Be prepared to read subtitles.
Cocktail(s) of the Week - Holiday Double Feature
Salmiakki Koskenkorva
A bunch of Tyrkisk Peber candy crushed up & dissolved in vodka. Brandon gives this one a C, Steve drops an F on it.
Lonkero
2 oz gin
2 oz white grapefruit juice
3 oz grapefruit soda
1 oz lemon juice
Top w/ Club Soda & Garnish w/ grapefruit wedge
This cocktail gets an A-grade all around. A star of the 1952 Olympics has still got it.
Notes about this episode:
Rare Exports Shorts are available to watch on YouTube. Check them out. They provide some additional context to the movie.
Salmiakki is a black licorice-based candy, enhanced with ammonium chloride, that has positive benefits as a cough medicine. So, even if you "hate" the flavor, as Steve does, try drinking it for your health. And if you're from Finland, don't be offended, liking it doesn't really mean you have "no taste."
