Crushing the Cold War
I never imagined a podcast on the Cold War could be anywhere near this good! I've been a long-time fan of Cam's podcasts since Napoleon, and this is my favorite of their current seasons. The only disappointment is that I listen to the episodes the day they're released and then have to wait a whole week for more! Most popular readings and shows on the Cold War are primarily US propaganda and apologism. Instead, we get here the best of phallic humor against fallacies, a well-researched and comedically exuberant odyssey. As a history graduate student of Modern Europe, I am thrilled (though knowing Ray and Cam not surprised) with the level of real and intricate detail they get into without losing sight of the plot, except for interspersed diversions that honestly are as often insightful as they are bizarre (but in the best of ways). Overall, they demonstrate that history is much more illuminating and interesting once you search past the simplistic framework of "good" and "evil" to discover the motivations behind human behavior and development. They sometimes get infatuated with certain characters like Ho and Castro, but not undeservedly so or without much discussion, and ultimately, the subjects still remain thoroughly human. And yes, there are politics, but history is inherently political (like so much else in life). It is most useful to engage with and explore those politics to better understand the modern world than to plug our ears and shut our eyes. Didn't work out so well for Oedipus. The chemistry between Ray and Cam is truly special, and while often harsh on the surface, it conveys a real bond of friendship that is touching while uproarious, sort of like a perverted Margaret Dumont to Groucho Marx. This show is thorough, hilarious, and engaging. If you want an easy rehashing of old-fashioned narratives of American exceptionalism, put on the state of the union address. If you want to laugh hard enough to potentially burst your spleen while critically engaging with modern history, I'll point you to Ray and Cam's Cold War Podcast.Read full review »

Being a fan of 20th century history, having an in depth examination of the Cold War is something I've been looking forward to for a long time. The context is being set, with the various powers having many suspicions (somewhat justified) of each other, and soon the actual Cold War will...Read full review »
