“The story of the Powell family is fascinating and the production value of the podcast is high, but it's being suffocated by the blatant pro-Mormon bias from the narrator and KSL in general.
The clunky use of the full 11-syllable name of the church is unnecessary, and the not-so-subtle hints that both Josh and his father Steve made the choices they did because they left the church is nauseating. I know that's the family's conclusion but as a reporter, you need to take yourself out of that equation and challenge those assumptions. What's more, much of the noxious, patriarchal attitudes of the Powells can be attributed directly TO Mormonism.
It's clear to me that KSL is not the right group to tell this story. They lack the neutrality to really understaand what happened, and the result is a cautionary tale for Mormons who are thinking about leaving the fold.
