Constructive criticism...
The content is good and practical for serious language learners but the host doesn't seem to a native speaker of any language (except Spanish?) but considering the base language of the show is English this becomes a major limitation. For example, in one or two episodes they were discussing "a pinch of salt" but the host wasn't familiar with the expression in English. It's also very hard to listen to his atrocious accents in languages other than Spanish and English and I get the impression he's satisfied resting on his Spanish laurels rather than learning how to more properly pronounce the other Romance languages. He often rolls his r's in English, which also undermines his credibility. Unfortunately, the native experts in French, Italian and Portuguese that we listeners most need and want to hear appear on the show via phone. It's almost 2020: step your production game up. I think Skype, among other options, would provide superior sound quality. Then, since I have the volume up pretty loud to hear the guest, the cheesy fake applause sound effect he grossly overuses is a deafening tinny din. I sincerely mean this constructively, but my main complaint is Joel's vocal tonality. Considering it's a podcast that revolves around his voice, that's a big deal. I don't know if he's trying to sound nice or what exactly, but it strikes me as insecure and severely uncuts his credibility as a teacher (since he always sounds like he's asking a question) and frankly, it's just annoying and difficult to listen to. I listen anyway because I'm dedicated to learning languages and appreciate the content, so I urge you to work on improving this aspect of your delivery. If I notice improvement I'll be more than happy to increase my rating.Read full review »
