Sometimes exhausting...
Pro-tip: You can tell how many minutes of each episode are ad content by looking at the run times both before and after you start playing an episode. For example, it will display “43 minutes” before hitting play, then jumps up to like 56 minutes after it starts playing. This tells me there are more than 13 minutes of ads per episode! These two could really cut down on ad time by just doing a straight ad read, not adding conversational embellishment to every single ad. I get that they want to be engaging with the ads, it those who don’t want to listen aren’t going to listen to an ad just because it’s conversational. Their conversations are slow enough as it is. Please respect your listeners’ time. Also, I pay for other podcasts, but $10 a month is on the high end! 😬 September 20, 2023: Wow, 8 WHOLE MINUTES of ads in the middle of the episode! I think that’s a new record. Even after converting to their paid Patreon? 🤔 P.S. I like these two, have been listening for years and had a positive effect on my life. But paying for a subscription just to hear recaps of a two-decades old show (“The OC”). Sorry, I don’t love you guys THAT much. 😬 Updated review - October 2022: No wonder Kate always seems depressed and unable to get it together. The weight of systemic racism, capitalism, “the patriarchy,” the unending variety of calendars and PLANNERS…It must be truly crushing. Not to mention those nasty white cis men. The increasingly lengthy ads they ask us to listen to because their sponsors can actually track the listens now…The empty intentions that are rarely fulfilled. Man, it’s getting old. It feels performative, though I think they are both genuine. I think Doree is actually too smart for this. In another life, it seems Doree would beg to differ with all of this; her cynicism shines through. I read and enjoyed Doree’s book. This pod used to be better, and I continue listening because I hope it still can be. Is it possible to move on from all of this socio-political nonsense and talk about the fun stuff again?! — Old review: Still missing the time (before COVID-19) when the pod was only two episodes per week. I have been listening for years and this is still one of my favorite podcasts, but three episodes per week is a lot. I also want to echo some of the other reviews about Kate and Doree's negative comments on the state of the world, and "capitalism" (the thing that makes this show possible), and "the patriarchy" (what is this though, really?) History is a great teacher, and I can't think of a better time in than right now to be a woman or a person in general. Nothing is perfect, but a little perspective would be nice. Sometimes I can't tell if their negativity is genuine or pandering to the audience, but whatever it is, sometimes it is just exhausting.Read full review »

These two are so fun to listen to. I find myself laughing or nodding along every other word. Keep the brutal honesty and beauty talk comin’!

Like the host, I too became obsessed with political podcasts. Every morning I was like “tell me more how the world is falling apart.” This podcasts reminded me to take better care of myself! And occasionally turn off the constant stream of fear. The hosts are both incredibly charming and seem to...Read full review »
