“I went from 2004-2007 and graduated. I’m very familiar with much of what was reported here. Falwell Sr had his faults no doubt, but Falwell Jr was just awful for the school. He made it embarrassing to have a degree from here and I would love to see all the Falwell just quietly go away from LU.
Th at being said, the podcast loses me a little with some of the interviews with victims. First and foremost, these people should absolutely be heard and feel comfortable sharing their stories. But part of the problem is the way the Liberty Way is framed. Is it problematic? Absolutely. Should it be changed? Sure. But as students, we basically enter a contract to abide by it. So when someone goes out drinking (underage), goes to parties, gets pregnant out of wedlock, or enters into a same-sex relationship, that person is in effect breaking their contract. Of course there are penalties, otherwise what’s the point of having any rules at all? Again, im not saying we should victim-blame, but some of these victims seemed so upset at the prospect of having to face any consequences for the rules they admittedly did break. You can’t agree to play the game, then complain about the rules if you lose. I think heavy and swift consequences should have been imposed against the assaulters, so that part of the story I wholeheartedly agree with.
Lastly, there are many people who had no issues with LU. Obviously the point of this season was to expose the dark side, which it does so effectively and necessarily. But in order to show a slightly more balanced picture, we should note that most of the faculty were also against Jerry Jr. and did not stick up for him, offering instead to educate the students the best way they saw fit in their fields. Many many students have gone through unscathed and there are some amazing success stories from the school. It doesn’t take away from the ugly side, but it shows at least that there is a decent side there removed from Jerry Jr and the bureaucracy.
Still very compelling and eye-opening!”
