I tried…
Made it to episode 4 and had to quit listening. Not only was this incredibly difficult to follow, but I was very disappointed in the content. I had listened to The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill and hoped this would follow in calling out hypocrisy in the church. I found the opposite. Hillsong has deep issues. Any church with a pastor who rises to celebrity status is in territory where they must tread carefully. The focus is no longer Christ. It is about the weekly ‘concert’ and pastor whose messages stray farther away from biblical truth as they attempt to fit themselves into pop culture. It becomes a numbers game. How many attend, how many livestream, how many hit songs does the worship team write? While this isn’t inherently bad, it is when the spiritual life of the church takes a back seat. I was sad to see that this issue wasn’t the focus of the podcast. The church is supposed to be anti-culture. If being a Christian is suddenly cool, we are all in trouble.
