Great history lesson, interesting premise- but spice it up!!
I'm a total history geek, especially when it comes to documentaries and podcasts. I think the sound quality, pacing and storytelling are all great, as is the premise of the show. One thing that could be improved upon is the structure. Most successful podcasts are consistently around the same time each episode, spanning from 15-30 minutes. Under that feels too short, longer than that, people will get bored, no matter how compelling the podcast. The other thing I would recommend is background music/sound affects. Listening to a guy talk for an hour isn't always the most exciting thing. Podcasts are a really unique medium. You can do things you can't on other platforms. So try to be more liberal with background noise. And not just music!! It's largely a story-telling podcast, and so it's important to help the listener paint descriptions in their mind. You can do this with sound. For example, if you're talking about a boat voyage, there can be ocean sounds, or if it's describing a battle, try putting in the sound of yelling and sword clashes. It really helps bring the story to life. For a podcast that I think has a superior mastery of sound affects, check out Tanis. Its a documentary-style fictional podcast that does a great job of creatively harnessing sound. For one closer to your type of podcast, check out Lore--- its about the history of different mythical creatures and I was really reminded of it while listening to your podcast. Finally, make it available on more mediums. I almost never use itunes for podcasts. Instead I do it through soundcloud, spotify, youtube, and especially podbay and stitcher. Hope this helps!! I'm genuinely eager to keep listening!!!!!Read full review »

Very gripping narrative, exceptional detail and genuine enthusiasm make this one of the clearest overall pictures of Ancient Greece one is likely to find. Great pacing. Nifty introductions as well. A highly bingeable podcast!

This podcast is one of my favorites and I have been listening to it nonstop since I first started. Rob Sims takes a fantastic approach into retelling the classical history of the Persian and Peloponnesian Wars. He goes into depths about this period, however he makes it very comprehensible for the...Read full review »
