Good solid work
A very good podcast from my countrywoman! As an avid amateur historian on the crusades I have a lot of respect for the work that takes place for each episode. Good work Sharyn! Also, to Tancred de Hauteville (the reviewer, not the knight) and others, firstly she is Australian, not Brit. It's obvious that's the case from both the accent and the geographical references, but clearly as an American scholar, you're geography is lacking. Secondly, talking about the invasion of the European continent and siege of Malta etc as causative factors is both chronologically incorrect but also irrelevant, as those historical episodes, while interesting, have never been titled "Crusades" and would therefore not fall under the purview of this podcast would they? While the invasion of Spain under the Umayyid dynasty as a causititive factor of the crusades IS an interesting topic for discussion, again, it's not totally relevant to the topic of these podcasts. Although the Reconquista and Cathar and Northern Crusade could all be covered in either later episodes or another podcast. I'd listen if it was well researched. Sharyn, good work. On another note, it might be worth checking out Zoe Oldenbourg's exhaustively researched book on the crusades. Its been translated, or you can get in in Audiobook form, read by Nadia May, it contains a lot of detail on lesser characters such as Reynard of Chatillion, William of Melun and Peter the Hermit which really bought the period alive for me. I highly recommend it. Also, thanks for the recommend of books, many I have read or know of, but some I did not and they have been much appreciated.Read full review »

I LOVE Sharyn's dry humor approach to the Crusades. Not only is the podcast thoroughly researched, she does a good job breaking down the events and characters into absorbable story arcs. Her Python-esque humor is a perfect fit for the era (though I am still waiting for the Holy Hand Grenade...Read full review »

I have listened to most of the history podcasts that are available, and I feel this is extremely well done. Sharyn presents the story in a clear and unbiased fashion. She gives a lot of interesting and fun facts without losing track of the larger historical picture. Thank you so much Sharyn, I...Read full review »
