Weird, Funny, and Musical!
This show starts every episode with a brief intro reminiscent of sitting in a theatre and hearing the orchestra tuning their instruments. It immediately sets the mood that you're stepping into a version of reality that will be heightened and a bit different from the one we know. Fans of Oz will recognize the bits of lore that gets mentioned, though a lot of the references went over my head. I've seen the Wizard of Oz and the Wiz, and read a few of the stories, but I don't know the canon well. That said, the sound design and original songs throughout help emphasize the surreal, whimsical tone of the setting and punctuate the humor and bits of melancholy perfectly. The music made me think of how Adventure Time and Steven Universe incorporate music without necessarily getting to a frequency or pervasiveness that I'd expect from a musical. Some of the songs are haunting and atmospheric, calling back to hungry days on the plains, while others are fun and catchy tunes you'll find stuck in your head. While the main story follows characters from our world, there are flashbacks that give a look into the history underpinning the current story. The biggest criticism I have of the show is that it was difficult to understand what was happening for the first several of the flashbacks. Having more background knowledge of the lore of Oz might have helped with that, but I generally found myself confused about who exactly was speaking, and what they were talking about. All that said, as the show goes on, the connections between the flashbacks and the current story become clearer, so it's definitely worth sticking around. Don't worry if you're not understanding everything at first. The current batch of episodes being released at the end of 2020 are apparently remasters, so there should be plenty more of the story to look forward to as the rest of the episodes are updated and uploaded.Read full review »

If you love The Wizard of Oz or just want to be transported to another world, go give this a listen. It takes place 100 years after Dorothy's famous adventures in Oz, and the show beautifully captures that world's beauty, whimsy, and dangers. And: it's a musical!Read full review »
