Mr Edwin Keh, the CEO of HKRITA was one of the panelists in the discussion on sustainable materials, closed-loop production systems, and circular business models. Dr Alex Chan, Senior Research Manager at HKRITA shares the story behind the Green Machine. This innovative technology uses a chemical hydrothermal treatment to selectively decompose cotton into cellulose powders, which enables the separation of polyester fibres from the blends.

Hong Kong generates tonnes of textile waste that ends up in landfills every day. To address this issue, a smart sorting system has been developed to identify garment type, fabric material, structure and colour by using artificial intelligence and image analysis.  This system is capable of automatically sorting used garment.
