“I owe this podcast for initiating my journey from a someone who works out in a CrossFit gym to someone who harbors a passion for CrossFit - not just the Games but the methodology as well. John and Niki have done some great work, both in their independent roles (Make Wods Great Again and Reporter on the media team) and together in this podcast.
Lately the ego on the show has just gotten to be too much to listen to. I first noticed it a while back after John bought an affiliate and said (about people who come to the gym to do their own workouts and not the box programming) that “those are the people you don’t want in your gym because they’re not part of the community”. I’m one of those folks, thanks for letting me know I’m not welcome - I promise I won’t drop in.
John and Niki are not just unreceptive to feedback, they repeatedly encourage people who don’t like how they conduct themselves to unsubscribe. This is over simple things like use of foul language - which is a shame, because there was a point where I’d have loved to listen to this podcast with my kid.
In every episode John makes a point of mentioning important or prominent folks that he knows, engages with, spends time with, and or provides feedback to, even when not relevant to the subject. A significant portion of episode 105 is committed to how he spent the entire 2023 Games talking to and meeting people, being recognized, and engaging with Don Faul directly (in other words, repeatedly having his ego stroked). He then goes on to say that the meet and greet he and Niki hosted wasn’t meaningful to him - this from a guy who constantly says that he’s about the community - and ends the podcast saying that the Games team “is going to have to change some stuff if they want me to come back next year.”
Seems it’s long past time for me to take their advice and SMASH that unsubscribe button.”
