Essential Sci-Fi For Any Fiction Podcast Lover
After the apocalypse, HartLife (an insurance company) became the government of Hartford, Connecticut, now all there appears to be. The loyal policies of HartLife live in the tunnels, safe from the frozen wastes outside. When I started listening to Our Fair City earlier this year, it didn't take me long to catch up on all the episodes and season breaks from the past four years. It's so brilliant and the story has just the right amount of complexity. It took me a little while to get the characters straightened out since there are so many of them (and it can be hard to tell who's who when all you have to go on is audio), but who wouldn't want to go back and listen to the first couple seasons once you recognize everyone's voice? It's too good to listen to just once. Our Fair City is adorable, weird, and sciencey. As the show goes on and characters' lives come together, the relationships formed absolutely crush the heart by being both super cute and sometimes super sad. Herbert West is freaking perfection and I love him. So quotable. And all that goes for everyone else in the show who sciences or ends up sciencing; they're all great. I also am so in love with Loamy, the fierce FeMole who's gone through so much, but has never forgotten what it was all for. All the characters are just wonderful: complex, SO well-acted, unique, necessary. They are many and they are ALL my favorites. Other great stuff about Our Fair City: season blooper reels (seriously worth everything), guest appearances by a certain voice of a certain desert community, stellar world-building, TOP voice acting (like seriously, they're all so good I don't even know what to do sometimes), great original music as well as parodies (why can't our popular music be the stuff that plays on the HartLife radios??). Also I'm so excited that they're making an "If you aren't constantly in danger of obliterating everything you know, you aren't really doing science!" shirt (Herbert quote, of COURSE). If you listen to fiction podcasts and you're not subscribed to Our Fair City, you're missing not just something, but everything! It's heartbreaking and heartwarming and will have you giggling to yourself randomly as you go about your day. Why are you still reading this review? Subscribe! If you enjoy drama and comedy and sci-fi then you need to enjoy this podcast. It's required. The only sad thing is how difficulty it must be to make the podcast; I'm impatient and would love daily doses.Read full review »
