Love it. Jessica and crew demystify the story process.

I've had trouble finding any podcasts about the crafting of comic books, or the careers that sometimes go with that. But this podcast, while not restricted to the comics medium, feels that niche excellently.

I’m a fiction writer and have really enjoyed this new angle on the craft of storytelling. Even though the primary focus is radio, there is so much to apply to my own process. Plus it’s really entertaining!

This is the first time I review a podcast (and I listen daily to podcasts). It is SO GOOD. A couple of things: 1) Not just a podcast. There is a really cool WEBSITE, with show notes, transcripts of the podcasts, links. There is a BLOG by Jessica Abel and there is a BOOK too. 2) There is a show...Read full review »

This is my first iTunes review. I’m a fan of ‘RadioLab' and 'This American Life' but also a lapsed professional comics artist. This is my new favorite show in any form of media (and I am only on Episode 3).

Incorporating interviews/conversations with top practitioners, and abundant examples, this progressive step-by-step tutorial is a worthy companion to its eponymous graphic-novel-style instructional book, and an invaluable aid to storytellers of all levels in all media… Basic narrative principles...Read full review »

This is a very juicy and useful podcast for anyone seeking to create a story or develop their creative vision. To my view, it’s much more effective than a million books on the subject because it’s audio - this means the storytelling itself is working on your brain using the same methods it is...Read full review »

I can't thank the OoTW crew enough. It's insightful and fun. It really feels like we're discovering things together. There are so many people and programs out there that capitalize and exploit aspiring creators. Out on the Wire feels real without using all that promising cosmic language of...Read full review »

I have never been so inspired and at the same time equipped to move my story from idea to concrete product. You don't need to have read the book, though it is a masterwork in and of itself. All you need is this podcast, do it!

This is such a great idea. Abel has access to the pub radio rock stars in this podcast. Just as useful are the workshop episodes. All great material to augment teaching. The “Focus” episode will hugely help my students understand the focus of the audio documentaries they are producing.

Jessica Abel provides super concrete techniques for planning and creating stories. The way she combines interviews and examples is making story structure clearer to me than it has been before. I'm also doing the Google working group, which is a good way to make the info really sink in, by...Read full review »

Listening to the podcast and joining in on the discussions in the google community is a terrific way to develop your story-telling ideas and connect with other people. I love the fact that you can get feedback on your own idea as well as suggest things to others. Long may this continue!

Jessica Abel and her crew are offering what should be a $500 (or more) distance-learning course for free. Her generosity of spirit, wide-ranging knowledge and creative ways of expressing that knowledge to her audience, are just a few of the reasons you should subscribe if you are at all...Read full review »

After reading the book, I had to check out the podcast. I didn't realize it until after episode 2.5, but the podcast is what is keeping me on track to make my podcast real. Instead of this flighty idea that only exists in my head, I think Out on the Wire is going to ensure that I have a podcast...Read full review »

At least one other group participant I recognize from comics, and others from all different places. It's been a pleasure...Read full review »

Jessica has access to many of my favorite and most talented storytellers in public radio. Just hearing their voices in this podcast — never mind their answers — is an absolute thrill. Whether Jessica Abel means it to be or not, but Out on the Wire is a master class in how to tell a story—something that anyone can benefit from. The thing I love most is that there’s homework in this podcast and they actually review people’s work on in-between episodes. The fact that this is free...Read full review »

This podcast is the result of strong interviews with great radio and podcast storytellers - developed into a how-to book and now a podcast creatively working through the process of developing and producing stories in audio and other media. It's a cool creative workshop!

If you make stories, or want to make stories then you should listen to Jessica Abel. Why? Because she is listening to other makers, and she knows how to break it down.
