Hugh Cassidy was a powerlifting pioneer becoming the sports first super heavyweight world champion in 1971. He could bench 570 lbs. with a two second pause and squat 800 lbs. below parallel without a suit. As a pioneer, there was no template and very little information, if any, to follow. Marty recently began working with a 15-year old named Andrew who he set up on a 12-week periodized strength program consisting of mainly the core four lifts, bench press, overhead press, squat and deadlift. For the most part, this is the same lifting strategy Marty used himself as a teenager in 1964. Mark Chaillet was a powerlifting savant. He eventually squatted a below parallel 1,000 lbs in training and 940 in competition. Mark deadlifted 880 weighing 270. He set a dozen world records in the deadlift. He asked for no one’s opinion about training. He had one way of training: period. He trained minimally within each session: three lifts and three lifts only, each done once a week for a single periodized rep.
