It starts well, potentially interesting spy story. But it bogs down in details and there are many repetitions of segments over multiple episodes. Sometimes you wonder if you have accidentally skipped to a previous episode. And the theme music keeps being played; it gets to be the worst ear worm.

This is an intriguing Cold War story as told by two excellent hosts. It was a very tense time in world history, and it was fascinating to hear a Cold War story from New Zealand of all places. Well done!

I wouldn’t trust Espiner to report where the sun rises in the morning. Complete waste of time

Great work guys. You make a good double act. This content is important. These secrets should not be taken to the grave.

A great podcast with the right balance between personal, national and international perspectives. Brilliant, thanks. Well presented by two fine voices too.

I really enjoyed this and found NZ's little known involvement in the Cold War era fascinating. Well done!Read full review »

Really good stuff, guys. At last a NZ media team produce some world-class content worth listening too end-to-end. The Red Live series was the same. Please keep it up and make more great stuff like this.

Super interesting, and very well produced. I have a new appreciation of NZ’s involvement with intelligence warfare.

This is an exceptionally good podcast. It uses a single historical operation to explore bigger picture issues, including New Zealand security and foreign policy, the so called Five Eyes and Cold War politics. I really enjoyed every episode.

I’ve been musing that Jim may have considered the job as a success because the crew went in and out of the Czechoslovakian embassy without incident, and photographed/copied what the crew thought was the correct material. The material, however, turned out NOT to be valuable or the codes retrieved...Read full review »

Really well produced and fascinating podcast. I loved it. Well worth the effort to listen. Looking forward to the China podcast. Thank you.

I love true crime and espionage so this gripped me from the beginning. They tell the story so well, featuring interviews with people on the inside, and who knew NZ played such a big part in the Cold War!

I loved this podcast! Who would have thought that New Zealand would have had Cold War intrigue? Would be a great Inspo for a tv show.

I wasn’t sure how they were going to string out such a small event in NZ history but boy did they - loved every moment of it! Also loved the music, it was perfect.

What a great series! A very interesting look at NZ’s spying past. Probing questions. Well produced. Can’t wait for what’s next

As one who lived in Wellington in the 70’s I found this series very evocative. It sounds like Rob Muldoon’s well known anti-Soviet paranoia was well founded. Good presentation with great personal insights. Kudos to all involved.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Something unique in the NZ podcast world, would strongly recommend to Aus/NZ fans of political, modern history or crime stories. Good to hear from ol Aunty Helen Clark here and there too.

Excellent series covering a fascinating part of NZ history you never hear about. Great work.

Outstanding series guys - really interesting. I had no idea that NZ was so involved in Cold War espionage. Coincidentally we live in Wadestown and an elderly neighbour who has lived here for years (generations) told me our house was either the Czech embassy or the Czech ambassoders residence- I...Read full review »

Great to have this scrutiny, the memories and the details here. Ross Himona's blog 'the kumara vine' has some great yarns and suppositions from the era too. An evocative and cool soundtrack from Athonie Tonnon too; some of those loops have become intruguing earworms.Read full review »

What a wonderful treat it was discovering this iPod series. I really appreciated the chance to listen to some well researched NZ/Aotearoa journalists telling a great story. I look forward to hearing more from this team. Keep it up please. Anna

Great content and story telling. But there is no need to have such a long intro on any of the episodes after number one, taking five minutes to reintroduce the podcast is a waste of my listening time and has little value. Rnz needs to get with the times in that your listeners aren't stupid...Read full review »

A really good listen and a fascinating side to NZ history

Lots of great information. But dragged out too long. To much ‘building anticipation’ and not enough getting to it. A short music break after every second sentence is painful.
KiwiSammyT via Apple Podcasts · New Zealand · 06/08/20
I don’t know if its a glitch caused in editing or the upload but there are lots of annoying skips and jumps, it almost sounds like stupid things are being redacted haha. Unfortunately it’s not an enjoyable listen for this reason. The story and the person telling it sound like something I could...Read full review »
