Scientific Literacy is Important
I grew up with two (conservative) parents who were both biology teachers. both of them placed a high level of value in scientific literacy and critical thinking, as well as value in the scientific method of study as well as accuurate presentation of that data. Sydnee has those same values, and she does a great job of presenting that information in an accurate way that takes health and facts into consideration. Justin adds his typical McElroy-Brother brand of comedy in the sidelines, but it's just an added opportunity to see a couple that seems to truly love and value each other for their respective talents interact. Sawbones is excellent as a (sometiumes surface level, because it would be foolhardy to try to present this as a college level course: it's a comedy and history and science podcast, not a medical journal) vehicle to deliver not only sound scientific history as well as fair comentary on our medical system, with all its flaws. There are many comments here that seem to indicate the show is too political. I think these are people who are unfortunately unwilling to recognize that science and medicine, while supposed to be based on facts and - you guessed it - science, have BECOME politicized. Simply by merit of acknowledging how true scientific information has become polluted by politics, the show has to confront politics. Not doing so would be like presenting american history without discussing political parties: politics has shaped out history in numerous ways, and to see the whole picture, you need to be presented with the whole picture. (It also seems like most of the complaints come from people who dislike that modern healthcare values not abusing LGBT individuals with harmful therapies, or from people who somehow thought President Number 45 was impartial in his "understanding" of medicine and science, so take any of these low-star complaints with a boulder of salt.) Aside from the accurate scientific information - and when inaccurate, corrected (as is ethical and proper practice in the long history of medicine) - the podcast DOES present a husband and wife who clearly care about each other and their family. While the show addresses some tough topics, it's a lighthearted and wholesome experience, and is honestly enjoyable enough because of that reason on its own. Give it a listen. You deserve a moment of distraction from your burdens, whether it is a mystery boil or a case of the Mondays.Read full review »

I hadn't heard Sydnee and Justin speak together since I met them at PAX East. I still lament the demise of Sat Dish but Sawbones is a better show. I laughed, I learned, I came another step closer to donating to Max Fun. I'm looking forward to more.Read full review »
