Navigating a Relationship when one Partner owns a Property Hey everyone, long time lurker, first time poster! My friend (really!) has been dating this guy for a little over a year and they both each gross around $100k. My friend currently owns her own condo and has a significant amount of equity. They both started to look into homes to purchase together about a month ago. She was willing to put the down payment on this property and split the mortgage payments and other costs after closing. Her boyfriend does not have any savings and is not necessarily financially savvy. They began to argue about finances and she didn’t feel comfortable moving forward with purchasing a property together. Her boyfriend became upset and said that she broke his trust and that he felt that she didn’t trust him. She explained that there is no rush, and that he could move into her condo and look into houses again after some time when he’s been able to save up some of the deposit or if they took their relationship further through marriage. As a result of this conversation, he would claim that he didn’t trust her and asked her if she would put his name on the title of her condo. She was in complete shock and shut down every conversation about property and told him that if he didn’t trust her over this decision then we don’t have a relationship. That was ultimately the end of their relationship. Was she wrong to jump to that conclusion? I have no idea why anyone would ask their boyfriend/girlfriend to add their name to the title of a pre-existing property. It just didn’t make any sense and seemed very odd! What do you guys think?
