“This show is weird.
That's the first thing that came into my head when I heard it while driving in my car a couple weeks ago. It was on the radio. On NPR. And I was like, WTF? Okay first there's the RJD2. And then there's the sound effects. But most of all you've got this voice. This voice from Glynn Washington that's part Samuel L. Jackson and part David Attenborough all EQ'ed with a The Young and the Restless filter.
So here's how it is: you walk into this party at this smokey apartment with trippy tapestries behind the beat-up couch. And there's some MF Doom bumpin' on the stereo. And you sit next to this sexy Anansi who's sort of glowing because you're both drinking two-buck chuck, and he starts whispering these stories in your ear. And maybe it's the music or the atmosphere or something but even when it gets cheesy and dramatic, you're LOVING it, because it's nothing like anything you've ever heard before and what the hell? If it feels good, why not?
I think that they've got something here. And from my experience with dramatically different new public radio shows, I think it's going to evolve it goes through the whole public radio NPR odyssey. I think with time Anansi's going to have to straighten his tie a little bit. But I'm ready to hear that change. Bring it on, guys. I've got my glass of two-buck chuck here and waiting.”Read full review »
