Clara Francis interview
Hi Dawn, I listened to your podcast with Clara Francis sand the loss of her daughter, Maude. She spoke so eloquently about her feelings and about how she dealt with the loss and also the person that it has made her become. I lost my , daughter, Melanie 39 years ago when she was just 5 months old. She died of Pompes (a missing enzyme, Maltass, which breaks down sugars in your body). It’s a recessive gene and un-beknown to us, my husband and myself were carriers. It’s a very rare condition and the prognosis is a child doesn’t usually live beyond one year. We had a son beforehand who is healthy so we had no idea how lucky we were to have Richard who was was 3 at the time. The trauma of “waiting” for your child to leave this earth is the worse thing I and my husband have ever been through. Unlike Clara’s experience her loss was one of utter shock, I knew my child was going to die but I was still unprepared. Clara was so intuitive describing the two outcomes of our losses as being on a different level - me expecting it and her not, each nonetheless painful. After some genetic counselling, tests and mustering a courage (1 in 4 chance of it happening again), we too went on to have another child , Alison and it was like “turning a page” with regard to the healing of grief but in no way undermines Melanie's precious short life. On the contrary, Melanie taught us to treasure life and to appreciate the lives that our two children have - that is truly a gift! Like Clara’s son, my daughter too asked was she the replacement child (no one can replace a child) but I knew I would not have wanted a third child had Melanie lived. Enriching podcast - thank you Dawn and You Clara in sharing your story. CatherineRead full review »
