A wonderfully eclectic journey through the medium
Just to set the scene - I love this podcast so much that I downloaded iTunes, signed up for an ID and went through the painful process of setting all of that up JUST SO I could leave Sound of Play a glowing review. If, like me, you grew up playing video games and enjoying their music, but always felt a little bit weird about it (who the heck listens to video game soundtracks, eh?) -- this is the podcast for you. It's a brilliant vindication of the medium. Unpretentious, quirky and broad-ranging, this podcast has a little something for everyone and has introduced me to literally hundreds of tracks and games that I wouldn't have otherwise sampled. The hosts are always entertaining, the guests always interesting, and the music is allowed to breathe on its own. Sometimes we hear the best modern soundtracks, sometimes 8-bit classics. Sometimes we hear quite painful stuff that only a hardcore fan of a particular game or genre could truly love, and that's fun and fascinating to hear about in its own way. It all feeds into a joyful experience that makes introverted little nerds like me feel like we're not alone in our love for this endlessly inventive medium. I have listened to over fifty episodes in less than three months, and I can't recommend it enough!Read full review »
