You Legend
I stumbled across one of Simon Whistler’s YouTube videos earlier this year—“The Year of the Virus,” as he called 2020. I was unfamiliar with him, but tended to watch top ten lists, like spooky facts and stories, or funny fails, (if I watched YouTube over Netflix at all.) So when one of his TopTenz videos came up on auto play, I watched it; and instead of just being slightly less bored, I was drawn in and fascinated. I was actually learning really interesting things I never knew, not just hearing lists of some host’s top ten favorite whatever. I’m one of those ridiculously insatiably curious people who just wants to “learn all of the things”—and have been teased my whole life because I’ll research something in depth just because it interested me and I wanted to know more about it. “You do research... for fun?... It wasn’t a homework assignment or work task?... Really?” Yep, really. 🤓 So, with a massive spread of channels and topics, Simon Whistler has been keeping me quite a bit more sane in the silent solitude of quarantine. Even if I’m doing something else around the house, I’m usually listening to one of his videos while I do. So now I’m teased because whenever a friend has asked during quarantine what I’m doing, it always includes “and watching my educational YouTube videos, as usual.” 😅 The only problem with multitasking with the videos is I have a tendency to get drawn in by the historical photos, clips, or memes. I’ve admittedly never been a podcast listener before—I quite literally just downloaded the app today, because Simon started a true crime podcast intriguingly titled “The Casual Criminalist.” Oh. My. Stars. I’m quirky person in general, the daughter of an attorney and a psychologist/newspaper reporter, an actress who studies real people to improve my craft, and just somewhat morbidly curious, so true crime stories fit the bill for me like “Muah!” *chef’s kiss* Just listened to the short about Abraham Shakespeare, and actually did a spit take toward the beginning—as the city mentioned was Frostproof, Florida. It’s a small, rather obscure town that no one else I knew had ever heard of—and my late grandparents actually lived in a retirement community there during the winter for years. (Don’t worry, that’s not a spoiler alert.) I’m about to sit down and play the other two, longer episodes while I wrap about 8,000 Christmas gifts until my hands fall off. 😆 I’ll probably run out of podcast episodes before unwrapped gifts, but I’ll just bring YouTube back up then. (Check out his YouTube channels, too. There’s so much content and it’s fascinating, hilarious, and often both.) Looking forward to more intriguing and gripping stories in the future! 5/5 - Would absolutely recommend!

Thank you Simon. More podcasts are welcome. Please make more “The Brain Food Show” also. I listen to podcasts a lot as I’m a minibus driver. I have lots of empty drives to and from places, and podcasts are more fun and interesting than the radio. I’ve been catching up on your Biographics podcast...Read full review »
