“The officer/union leader misses/misidentifies the assignment of stimulus and response. His framing asserts that no stimulus is in play prior to the decision to resist the officers—absent force (or the legacy of a misuse of force)—what is the object of—or reason for resistance? It matters where you assign the stimulus—clearly—it matters where you “mark” the beginning of the narrative. What matters even more is that we consistently miss the precontext that is always already operating—preceding, informing, even inviting what is the too easily determination of the placement of the “once upon a time”—the choice of where to begin the story—which is always a choice.
Even more the earnest proclamation of “not seeing color” lingering almost poignantly in its insistence. Staying with the conversation—both interlocutors—created so much discomfort for the listener. Thank you for allowing us to sit in a real, hard, sustained communication across difference. Thank you for depriving us of the talking point. It’s a beautiful, hopeful gift. Well done.”
